Firms took substantial fees, offered comfortable assurances, and then placed the stories of the well-connected while hers went nowhere.
The dishonesty was rarely loud. It was the practiced indifference of people who had decided, long before she walked through the door, whose voice was worth carrying and whose was not. Access, it turned out, was not for sale to her at any price; it was reserved.
